Trippi star lands Cape Mile

6th Nov 2022

Drakenstein Stud’s evergreen champion sire Trippi has enjoyed a wonderful month or so, and the champion struck again at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth when his outstanding son Jet Dark ran out an emphatic winner of the G3 Cape Mile (1600m) on Saturday.

Despite not having raced since winning the G1 HKJC World Pool Champions Cup at the end of the July and having to carry 62 kgs in Saturday’s race, Jet Dark was all the rage for the 2022 Cape Mile and the handsome bay more than lived up to expectations.
Under red hot rider Richard Fourie, five-year-old Jet Dark raced well off the pace early in Saturday’s R250 000 feature before exploding into action with 200m left to run. From there, it was just a matter of who would run second, with Jet Dark powering away to score by a length and three-quarters.
One of five winners on the day for Justin Snaith, the Drakenstein Stud bred Jet Dark has now won eight of 17 starts for earnings of R4 320 350.
Equus Champion Miler, Middle Distance Horse and Older Colt last season, the brilliant Jet Dark has now won six graded races, with this tally including back to back wins in both the G1 Champions Cup and G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.
Out of the Jet Master mare Night Jet, Jet Dark was a R200 000 buy from the 2019 National Yearling Sale.
His sire Trippi has had a phenomenal start to the 2022-2023 racing season, with the former Vosburgh’s other flagbearers this season already including the likes of star three-year-old Charles Dickens, and fellow graded stakes winners Trip Of Fortune and Santa Maria. The latter went close to providing Trippi with yet more feature race success when she flew up late to claim third spot in Saturday’s Listed Laisserfaire Stakes at Kenilworth.
