Tuesday double for Rafeef

22nd Feb 2023

Ridgemont Highlands’ prominent resident sire Rafeef struck twice at Turffontein on Tuesday when the son of Redoute’s Choice came up with two winners on the card.
Rafeef’s Ashley Fortune trained son Black Egret broke his maiden in fine style when running out a convincing winner of the second race at Turffontein.
Under Ryan Munger, the gelded three-year-old turned the Racing 240 For Racing. For You Maiden Plate (1200m) into a procession, with Black Egret storming home to beat fellow Rafeef gelding Fish Eagle by two and three-quarter lengths.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Black Egret had finished second on debut before going on to fill the third spot in each of his four starts prior to Tuesday’s win.
The three-year-old is out of the Silvano mare Water Bird.
Ashley Fortune also trains Rafeef filly Ipso Factor, with that three-year-old making much of the running to land the fourth race, the Play Soccer 6,10 and 13 FM 85 Divided Handicap on Tuesday.
Under a great ride from Ryan Munger, Ipso Factor appeared beaten close home but fought back courageously to win by a long head.
Another bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Ipso Factor has now won twice from just seven starts.
The filly is out of the Machiavellian mare Awaited, with Ipso Factor a R300 000 buy from the 2021 August Two Year Old Sale.
The Leading First and Second Season Sire of his year, G1 Computaform Sprint winner Rafeef has two lots on offer at this weekend’s Cape Yearling Sale.
