Tuesday double for Vercingetorix

17th Aug 2022

Maine Chance Farms’ prominent sire Vercingetorix enjoyed a magnificent season in 2021-2022, and the champion son of Silvano was at it again when responsible for the winners of the last two races run at Turffontein on Tuesday.

His speedy four-year-old daughter Big Eyed Girl caught the eye when she mowed down her rivals to land Turffontein’s eighth race, the Racing240 For Racing. For You MR 84 Handicap (1000m).
Under Keagan de Melo, the Johan Janse Van Vuuren trained filly powered away in the closing stages of Thursday’s sprint to score by a length and a quarter.

Out of the Exceed And Excel mare Topless, Big Eyed Girl has now won three of 12 starts, with the filly placed on a further seven occasions. Bred by the Narrow Creek Stud, Big Eyed Girl was a R375 000 buy from the 2020 National Yearling Sale.

Vercingetorix’s second success came when his Klawervlei bred son Irrevocable Dream stayed on gamely to win the ninth and final race on Tuesday. Under Marco Van Rensburg, the six-year-old gelding dug down deep to land the Next Turffontein Racemeeting Thursday 25th August MR 66 Handicap (1200m) by just over a length. Trained by Fanie Bronkhurst, Irrevocable Dream had finished second last time out and Tuesday’s was the second win of his career.

South Africa’s Leading Sire of 3YOs and runner up on the General Sires List in 2021-2022, Vercingetorix is currently the sire of 21 stakes winners including the G1 winners Alesian Chief, Ambiorix, Astrix, Chansonette, Cousin Casey, Pomp And Power and Vernichey.
The former G1 Jebel Hatta winner has an excellent draft on offer at this month’s August Two Year Old Sale, with Vercingetorix’s string including juveniles out of such high-class racemares as Jet Aglow, Lauderdale, On Her Toes, and Surabi.
