Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s leading sire Var has a smart crop of three-year-olds representing him this season, and the G1 winning son of Forest Wildcat looks to have another bright sophomore prospect to his bow in the form of Vardy.
The latter made it two out of two when scoring a facile 1.25 length win in a MR 80 handicap over 1400m at Kenilworth yesterday, with Vardy winning for trainer Adam Marcus and jockey Craig Zackey.
Bred by the Tawny Syndicate, and bred on the same Var/Jet Master cross as multiple stakes winner Rivarine, Vardy was a R400 000 buy from the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
The gelding is one of a number of high class 3yos representing Var this season with others including G2 SA Nursery winner William The Silent, recent G3 Fillies Mile winner Ghaalla, and such stakes placed runners as Dewali, Heavenly Risk and Top Of The Class.
Champion Sire of 2YOs the past two seasons in a row, Var is enjoying his customary season in 2018-2019 thus far and, at the time of writing, is South Africa’s second Leading Active Sire by prize money.
Sire of 22 G1 horses (and counting) Var will also be represented in South Africa’s first juvenile race this season, with his Drakenstein Stud bred son Shinnecock one of six 2yos set to debut at Kenilworth on Saturday.
