Maine Chance Farms’ prominent sire Vercingetorix came up with a very impressive debut winner at Turffontein on Saturday.
His three-year-old daughter Southern Skies stamped herself as a filly to watch this season when she romped off to score on debut was she liked.
Trained by Johan Van Vuuren, Southern Skies turned Saturday’s Allied Steelrode Maiden Plate (1160m) into a procession, drawing off to win by a staggering seven and three-quarter lengths.
The race was a triumph for Vercingetorix, with Southern Skies beating another Vercingetorix sired first-timer, Virgin River, into second place.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, three-year-old Southern Skies was a R500 000 buy from the 2021 National Yearling Sale.
The unbeaten filly is out of the Victory Moon mare Sky Pirate, and is thus bred on the same Vercingetorix/Victory Moon cross as G1 TAB The Premier’s Champions Challenge winner Astrix.
Southern Skies is one of a growing number of promising three-year-olds representing Vercingetorix this season with others headed by Equus Champion Cousin Casey.
