Wednesday double for Canford Cliffs

22nd May 2025

Ridgemont’s inform stallion Canford Cliffs came up with a pair of winners at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Wednesday.
The five time G1 winner, who had just three runners on the card, is the sire of both Sweet Conifer, winner of Wednesday’s fifth race, and Strawberry Thief. The latter caught the eye when she won the seventh race at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

Beautifully bred three-year-old three-year-old Sweet Conifer, a half-sister to G1 SA Oaks winner Pine Princess, got off the mark when she won the Wolf Power Syndicate Open Maiden (F and M) over 1400 metres.
The Crawford trained filly, under a good ride from Richard Fourie,  raced just off the pace early on before hitting the front and staying on gamely to win.

Bred by Ridgemont, who race Sweet Conifer in partnership with Devin Heffer, Wednesday’s winner is out of the Badger Land  mare Scent Of Pine.

Sweet Conifer’s paternal half-sister Strawberry Thief provided Canford Cliffs with his second win on Wednesday when she won the Celebrating Centurion Member Jonathan Snaith’s Birthday Class 4 (F and M) over 1800 metres. Another hailing from the Brett and James Crawford yard, Strawberry Thief, under a patient ride from Richard Fourie, came from well of the pace to get up close home and win convincingly.

Canford Cliffs has had a wonderful season in 2024-2025, with his flagbearers including all of Direct Hit (G3 SplashOut Cape Of Good Hope Nursery/Listed East Cape Nursery), Tenango (G3 Champagne Stakes) and Almond Sea (Betway Swallow Stakes).
