Varsfontein Stud’s successful sire Judpot had a day to remember at Turffontein this past Sunday when daughters Polly Wolly Doodle and The Smell Of Rain won their respective races to give Judpot a double on the card.
Bred by Varsfontein, Polly Wolly Doodle made it career win number four (and her second win from her past three outings) when justifying favouritism in race three.
The well bred filly, a R200 000 buy from the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, also provided trainer Candice Dawson with the first leg of her first ever winning double on Sunday.
Judpot’s second winner on the card came in the form of The Smell Of Rain, who made it win number four for trainer Erico Verdonese when scoring an off the pace win over 1450m on Sunday. The filly, who won three of her first four outings, is one of two winners produced by the stakes winning Up And At’ Em mare Belle Of Choice, whose 3 wins included the Listed Lady’s Slipper.
An A P Indy half-brother to French classic winners Kingmambo and East Of The Moon, the regally bred Judpot is a proven top class sire, whose top runners include Equus Champion Along Came Polly, and G1 winners Forest Indigo and Juxtapose.
Judpot has 3 lots on the Cape Yearling Sale –a half-sister to stakes performer Pagoda, this filly’s dam is a winning ½ sister to champion and G1 producer Festive Occasion (Lot 39), a colt (inbred to Nureyev) out of a winning daughter of Caesour and G1 winner State Treasure (Lot 49) and a filly whose third dam is former champion racemare Kiss Of Peace (Lot 142).
He also has four lots on the March Yearling Sale, including a colt out of a four time winning daughter of champion sire Captain Al (Lot 60), and a filly out of a winning daughter of outstanding Irish sire Shamardal (Lot104).
