Drakenstein Stud’s red hot sire What A Winter looks to have a potentially very smart filly to his name in the form of the Narrow Creek Stud bred two-year-old filly Fly Away.
The latter, who was backed into 17-20 tote favouritism, put up a dazzling debut when the flashy chestnut romped home to win by 4.75 lengths over 1000m at the Vaal on Thursday.
Fly Away, who is closely inbred to What A Winter’s multiple champion sire Western Winter, simply drew further and further clear over the closing stages of the maiden juvenile plate to win as she liked.
In the process, the Paul Peter trained filly stamped herself as a potential contender for some of the 2yo feature races later in the season.
Out of the Argonaut mare Ignition Lady, Fly Away was a R100 000 buy from the 2018 National Yearling Sale.
Fly Away is the sixth juvenile winner this season for her four time G1 winning sire What A Winter, with the latter’s other 2yo scorers in 2018-2019 including debut winner Chilly Winter.
Also responsible for this season’s G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes winner Clouds Unfold, What A Winter has nine lots on offer at Sunday’s Cape Yearling Sale.
South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2016-2017, What A Winter also has a 29 strong draft on offer at the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
