Drakenstein Stud’s Cartier Champion Duke Of Marmalade has made an excellent start to his stud career in South Africa, and the five time G1 winner was represented by another stakes winner, from his first local crop, when his daughter Princess Irene won the Listed Ardmore Jamaica Handicap at Kenilworth on Friday afternoon.

The 3yo filly, one of three winners on Friday for trainer Brett Crawford,  made it three wins in a row when scoring a three-parts of a length win in the 2000m Jamaica Handicap.

Bred and owned by Drakenstein Stud, Princess Irene was ridden to victory by Sean Veale.

The filly has been a soul of consistency, with Princess Irene having won or placed in six of her seven starts to date.

She is the 38th individual stakes winner for her sire Duke Of Marmalade, whose previous stars include the G1 winners Big Orange, Nutan, Simple Verse, Sound Of Freedom and French Oaks winner Star Of Seville.

The half-brother to G1 Investec Derby winner and promising Coolmore sire Ruler Of The World has got off to a flying start in South Africa, with Duke Of Marmalade’s earlier local runners headed by Cape champion Temple Grafin, the above mentioned Princess Irene, Kenilworth Fillies Nursery runner up Santa Clara and the promising Duke Of Spin –a winner of two of only three starts to date.

Santa Clara holds entries for both the G1 Cape Derby and G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes on Sun Met day at the end of the month.

Duke Of Marmalade, whose son Duke Of Waspington won at Dundalk on Friday, has an excellent 11 strong draft on offer at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, with his yearlings including a half-sister to champion Hot Ticket (Lot 78), a half-sister to G1 SA Classic hero English Garden (Lot 157) and a filly out of G1 SA Fillies Classic winner Siren’s Call (Lot 177).
