National Sensation, one of the Birch Bros’ top broodmares, has had an uneven life, with physical issues and temperamental quirks making things interesting for her owners.
The daughter of National Assembly has only one eye which has not made her the easiest mare to travel.
However, her temperament and physical issues have not prevented National Sensation from making her mark at stud.

Inverroche

Her first foal, by Greys Inn, is the six time winning filly Sensuous Sally, while her daughter Inverroche (by Ideal World) has earned  nearly R400 000 with her victories including the 2018 G3 Strelitzia Stakes.

National Sensation’s son Macallan (by Ideal World) also made news when topping the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale. The handsome bay was knocked down to Louis Goosen for R500 000 to head the KZN Sale.

The mare has a striking Ideal World colt foal at foot and is in foal to red hot sire sensation Gimmethegreenlight (whose Prix du Cap winning daughter Rose In Bloom fetched R800 000 at Saturday’s Central Route Trading Sale).

National Sensation’s success at stud, however, hardly comes as a surprise given her illustrious pedigree. Her sire National Assembly left behind 16 G1 winners, including champions National Colour, National Emblem, Soft Falling Rain, Historic Lady, Enchantress, Forward Filly and National Currency, and is broodmare sire of the Equus Champions Laverna, Mustaaqeem and current boom sire Vercingetorix.

Gimmethegreenlight

The winning National Sensation is out of Resolute Rose, a winning half-sister to G2 KZN Derby winner Royal Land (by Badger Land) and Field Flower (G1 Cape Fillies Guineas), with the latter now dam of exported G1 Sun Met runner up Last Winter.

National Sensation’s second dam, the stakes placed, Field Princess is a daughter of champion broodmare sire Northfields and she is also ancestress of high class stakes performers Woljayrine and Hashtag Strat.

Her fifth dam is the legendary broodmare Miss Disco –dam of US Horse Of The Year and eight times Champion US Sire Bold Ruler. This is also the family of dual St Leger winning sire Touching Wood.
