South African treble for Gimmethegreenlight

7th January 2019

Varsfontein Stud’s top class stallion Gimmethegreenlight, who enjoyed such great success in 2018, has made another excellent start to 2019, and the son of More Than Ready had another notable South African treble over the past weekend.

Gimme One Night

Himself the brilliant winner of the 2012 G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, Gimmethegreenlight’s trio included a very smart feature race winner in the form of Gimme One Night.

The latter, a member of Gimmethegreenlight’s remarkable first crop, made it three wins on the bounce when he won the G3 Heineken Chairman’s Cup at Kenilworth on Saturday for trainer Brett Crawford and jockey Lyle Hewitson. The Riverton Stud bred 5yo gelding, who had won the G3 Cape Summer Stayers Handicap at his previous outing, ran on strongly to record his sixth career win in the 3200m race by 0.4 of a length as tote favourite.

Gimme One Night, who was a R200 000 buy from the 2015 National Yearling Sale, was one of eight stakes winners to have emerged from his sire’s first crop.

Gimmethegreenlight, whose previous juveniles included the graded winners Gunner, Hack Green, and Barahin, has made a very pleasing start with his 2yos this season and the former Leading First Crop Sire had his third two-year-old winner, from just four runners, when the Dean Kannemeyer trained Emerald Band romped home over 1000m at Kenilworth on Friday. Bred by the Lammerskraal Stud  Emerald Band, who was making just his second career outing, outclassed his rivals to post a four and a quarter length win.

Surcharge

The sire’s third local winner over the weekend was She Rocks, who shed her maiden for trainer Stuart Pettigrew and jockey Diego De Gouveia over 1400m at Turffontein on Sunday.

Gimmethegreenlight has 13 yearlings on offer at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, including a full-sister to Fillies Guineas winner Gimme Six, a colt out of G2 winner Fairyinthewoods, and a full-sister to G1 winner Gunner.
