Klawervlei Stud’s exciting young stallion, and former Vodacom Durban July winner, Pomodoro was once again in the news when his champion daughter Return Flight won the G2 Gerald Rosenberg Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday.

Bred by Mike Sharkey, the brilliant bay made all to land the R500 000 Gerald Rosenberg Stakes by a length and a quarter, beating high class, stakes winning older rivals Insignis and Secret Potion emphatically.
Return Flight, now a winner of her last three races in a row, was ridden to victory by Anton Marcus, who is now unbeaten in three starts on the champion.

Last season’s Equus Champion 2YO Filly, Return Flight has now won three graded races in a row.

Her Gerald Rosenberg win pushed Return Flight’s earnings to R2 231 975, and she is now the leading contender for the title of Equus Champion 3YO Filly for 2018-2019. A bargain R20 000 yearling buy, Return Flight has now won six of her 11 outings, with her four graded victories including both the G1 Thekwini Stakes and G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic.

Pomodoro went close to enjoying a graded race double over the weekend, with his talented son Cirillo running a cracking (and close-up) third, behind G1 winning older rivals Undercover Agent (Rising Sun Gold Challenge) and Rainbow Bridge (Sun Met), in Friday night’s G2 The Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes at Greyville.

South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire in 2017-2018, Pomodoro also made headlines earlier this year when he was the Leading Sire by Aggregate at the Cape Yearling Sale.
