Oratorio granddaughters win on debut

30th September 2019

Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s in-form sire Oratorio is showing signs of becoming a successful broodmare sire, and he was once again in the news as a broodmare sire on Sunday, when he was damsire of a pair of debut winners in Ireland and Germany respectively.

Oratorio’s daughter Katiola was responsible for a very impressive debut winner at the Curragh, when two-year-old filly Katiba (by Footstepsinthesand) scored first time out over a mile for trainer Dermot Weld and owner-breeder HH Aga Khan.

Katiba, who holds an entry for next year’s G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas, ran on strongly close home in Sunday’s Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden to score by a head, with no fewer than 22 runners behind her.

Her trainer said after the win, “That was a good performance first time out and we might leave it at that for the year or she could go for the Eyrefield Stakes atLeopardstown. She’s a big filly and one to look forward to next year.”

Her dam Katiola, who has a yearling filly by Harzand and a colt foal by Charm Spirit, is one of a growing number of Oratorio mares who are showing promise as broodmares.

Another daughter of Oratorio responsible for a debut winner on Sunday was G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern heroine Temida. The latter’s two-year-old daughter Tabera (by Gleneagles) made a bold showing first time out when scoring over seven furlongs at Dusseldorf, with Tabera romping home to score by 4.75 lengths!

Oratorio is already damsire of group winners Dolce Strega and Paquirri, as well as Dee Stakes winner Viren’s Army, and he should build to this record over the coming seasons.
