Silvano filly makes history in SA Oaks win

6th June 2020

The Silvano sired Summer Pudding maintained her unbeaten record, and made history, when overcoming a far from easy trip to land the G2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks (2450m) at Turffontein on Saturday.

In the process, the Paul Peter trained Summer Pudding became just the third filly to land the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara (Gauteng Fillies Guineas, SA Fillies Classic, SA Oaks) following the likes of Igugu (2011) and Cherry On The Top (2013).

The latter is a half-sister to the G3 Jacaranda Handicap winning dam (the Strike Smartly mare Cherry On The Cake) of Summer Pudding herself.

Unbeaten in five starts going into the SA Oaks, Summer Pudding was all the rage for Saturday’s R150 000 race, despite having the disadvantage of a wide draw of 13 to overcome.

When jockey Gavin Lerena asked the favourite to quicken, Summer Pudding (making light of her wide trip) accelerated smartly and roared clear to go away and win by a convincing one and a quarter lengths.

Summer Pudding, who has now four graded triumphs to her name, claimed her sixth win, from as many starts, in a time of 156.97. She is the third Silvano daughter to win the SA Oaks following Happy Spirit (2008) and Wind Chill (2017).
She is one of 96 stakes winners sired by Silvano -Champion Sire in South Africa in 2012-2013, 2016-2017,2017-2018 and 2018-2019. Silvano, who is again leading the general sires list this year, has had another tremendous season in 2019-2020 with his flagbearers including such G1 winners as Kilindini, Summer Pudding and Zillzaal.

Silvano, whose local yearlings have made up to R9 000 000, has 37 yearlings on offer at this year’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
