Maine Chance Farms’ prominent stallion Querari is no stranger to siring high-class two-year-olds (he was Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2018-2019), and the son of Oasis Dream supplied a pair of juvenile winners at Kenilworth on Monday to take his tally of 2yo winners in South Africa for the season to six.

Trainer Justin Snaith sent out Querari fillies Homely Girl and Maria Querol to win Monday’s first and fourth races respectively.
Both Homely Girl and Maria Querol were ridden to victory by inform jockey Richard Fourie, who has been riding out of his skin of late.

Homely Girl, bred, like her sire’s top sprinting son Pinnacle Peak, by the Narrow Creek Stud, justified favouritism with a professional display at Kenilworth on Monday. Under Fourie, the Querari filly stayed on smartly over 1000m to shed her maiden by three-parts of a length.

Fourth in the Bloodstock South Africa Cape Yearling Sale Cup last time out, Homely Girl had finished second on debut on her only other outing.

Out of the Silvano mare Sherry, Homely Girl was a R40 000 buy from the 2020 Cape Yearling Sale.

Her Maine Chance Farms & Coolmore Partnership bred paternal half-sister Maria Querol provided Querari with a two-year-old double when she ran on strongly to shed her maiden by two and a quarter lengths over 1400m.

Making just her third start, the promising two-year-old had finished second to subsequent G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Gimme Dat on debut before finishing fifth over 1000m.

Out of the Dynasty mare Maria Theresa, Maria Querol was a R225 000 buy from the 2020 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Her G1 winning sire Querari proved popular at last week’s National Yearling Sale, where Querari yearlings fetched up to R650 000.
