Guineas double for Gimmethegreenlight

4th February 2024

Varsfontein Stud’s outstanding sire Gimmethegreenlight dominated feature race action at Turffontein on Saturday when South Africa’s reigning champion sire provided the winners of both the G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas (1600m) and G2 TAB Gauteng Guineas (1600m).
His three-year-old daughter Gimme A Nother made it five wins from five starts when romping home to a facile win in Saturday’s R750 000 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas in the style of a champion.
Under JP Van Der Merwe, the Mike De Kock-trained filly swooped down late on her rivals and powered away to win the 2024 Gauteng Fillies Guineas by a length and three quarters.
Another Gimmethegreenlight filly, recent G3 Mother Russia Stakes winner Let’s Go Now, finished fourth in Saturday’s Fillies Guineas.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein (she races for Mauritzfontein), Gimme A Nother made it a hatrick of graded wins with her win on Saturday, with the sensational filly having won the G3 Betway Fillies Mile and G2 Mike De Kock Ipi Tombe Challenge at her two starts before Saturday’s contest.
Her paternal half-brother, and last season’s Equus Champion 2YO Colt, Sandringham Summit showed his class when he stormed home to win Saturday’s TAB Gauteng Guineas decisively.
Under Gavin Lerena, the David Nieuwenhuizen-trained colt blew his rivals away as Sandringham Summit ran out a brilliant three-length winner of the 2024 Gauteng Guineas.
It was a third graded win for Sandringham Summit, with the colt also victorious in last season’s G1 World Pool Moment Of The Day Premiers Champion Stakes and G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud (who will stand Sandringham Summit at the end of his career), Sandringham Summit has now won four of eight starts and has earned R1 612 250 in prize money.
Out of the Captain Al mare Townsend, Sandringham Summit (bred on the same cross as fellow G1 winner Gunner) was a R1 700 000 buy from the 2022 National Yearling Sale.

Gimmethegreenlight is once again heading the South African General Sires premiership and is bidding for his third South African Champion Sires title.
