A service to Maine Chance Farms (Pty) Ltd’s top stallion Vercingetorix proved the star attraction at Sunday’s Cape Breeders Club Stallion Services Auction.
The Vercingetorix service was knocked down to Tinus Gericke for R270 000 to top the 2024 auction.
Vercingetorix’s popularity came as no surprise, with the champion son of Silvano having already supplied nine black-type winners this season, including graded stakes winners Double Grand Slam, Cymric, Little Ballerina, Rascallion,
He also topped the sires’ standings at the 2024 National Yearling Sale, where Vercingetorix yearlings averaged an impressive R1 161 029.
Ridgemont’s sensational sire Rafeef also proved popular on Sunday, with Volmoed Stud going to R125 000 to purchase a service to that G1 winning son of Redoute’s Choice.
Rafeef has had an excellent season in 2023-2024 with his flagbearers including the now-retired G1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Sprint winner Thunderstruck and fellow graded stakes winners Beating Wings, Frances Ethel, Mover And Shaker and Mrs Browning.
Drakenstein Stud’s G1 Sun Met winning champion One World came up with his 18th first crop winner on Sunday, and understandably breeders were keen to acquire a service to that champion son of Captain Al. It was, however, Laurence Wernars who bought the One World Service and went to R100 000 to obtain the service to arguably the most exciting young stallion standing in South Africa.
