Varsfontein Stud’s multiple champion sire Gimmethegreenlight made headlines on Saturday when his son The Real Prince captured the G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July (2200m) at Hollywoodbets Greyville.
In doing so, The Real Prince made amends for the defeat of his paternal half-brother Green With Envy, beaten favourite in the 2024 July.
Trained by Dean Kannemeyer, four-year-old The Real Prince came into the July off a storming fourth in the G2 Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes.
Shrewdly placed, the gelding was given a fine ride by Craig Zackey in Saturday’s R5 000 000 feature.
Zackey bought his mount with a well timed challenge to head favourite Eight On Eighteen. The favourite fought back doggedly, but The Real Prince had too much impetus and stayed on to win by a neck.
Bred and owned by Khaya Stables, The Real Prince has won five of ten starts, with the gelding also victorious in this season’s Listed City Of Cape Town Jet Master Stakes.
Out of the G1 winning Trippi mare Real Princess, The Real Prince is a full-brother to multiple G1 winner Gimme A Prince, G3 BakerMcVeigh Diana Stakes winner Gimmie’s Countess and debut winner Gimmie Rules.
The Real Prince is the 13th G1 winner for his outstanding sire, and is the first Hollywoodbets Durban July winner for Gimmethegreenlight.
The latter went close to having a big race double on Saturday, with Gimmethegreenlight colt Malmesbury Missile running a creditable second in the G2 Omoda Golden Horseshoe.
