Monday double for Fire Away

2nd September 2025

Wilgerbosdrift’s high-class sire Fire Away came up with a pair of eye catching winners at Fairview on Monday.
It was a 100% strike rate for Fire Away, with Pop Chart and Lanciafiamme his only two runners on Monday.

Lightly raced three-year-old Pop Chart got off the mark impressively when he won Monday’s Racing Today Maiden Plate (1200m).

Under Craig Zackey, the Gavin Smith trained gelding turned the race into a one-horse affair, with Pop Chart drawing off to win by six and three quarter lengths. The winning jockey described Pop Chart as a “proper horse” in the post-race interview.
Bred by Ascot Stud, Pop Chart was having just his second career outing, with the gelding having finished second, to subsequent Listed Champion Juvenile Cup winner King Prawn, on debut.

Racing for Alac (Pty) Ltd, Pop Chart is out of the Sail From Seattle mare Queen Of Pop.

Fire Away’s second winner on the day was Lanciafiamme, who claimed the Racing240 MR 96 Handicap (1400m).
Under Marco Van Rensburg, the Cliffie Miller trained four-year-old stormed home to get up in the shadow of the post to score by a short-head.

Owned by Mr Coatest, Lanciafiamme has won three of his last four starts.
The gelding, who was bred by the Piemonte Stud, is out of Noble Tune mare Abelie.

Fire Away, who shares his sire War Front with this year’s G1 Arlington Million winner Fort Washington among others, enjoyed good success at the August Two Year Old Sale, where his offspring made up to R700 000.
