The Sandown Stud based champion Pathfork was the toast of Turffontein racecourse on Saturday afternoon when his son Bingwa captured the G2 Allied Steelrode-Onamission Charity Mile (1600m) for a second year running.
Now in the care of Johan Janse Van Vuuren (Dorrie Sham had trained Bingwa to win the same race in 2021), five-year-old Bingwa downed a high-class field when victorious in Saturday’s R800 000 contest.
Under Gavin Lerena, Bingwa was always going well and hit the front half way down the home straight.
From there, it was a matter of whom would run second, as the Colin and Lynn Stonebridge bred and owned gelding powered away to score by two and a half lengths, while accounting for stablemate Puerto Manzano in comprehensive fashion.
Out of the Century Stand mare Marauding Lady, Bingwa, third in the G2 Mike O’Connor Joburg Spring Challenge last time out, has now won five of 27 starts for earnings of R1 405 850.
Pathfork went close to having a graded stakes double on Saturday with his talented three-year-old son Royal Victory finishing third in Saturday’s G3 Allied Steelrode Graham Beck Stakes, beaten under two lengths by the winner.
One of the better two-year-olds of last season, Royal Vision had previously finished runner up in both the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes and G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe.
Ireland’s Champion 2YO Colt of 2010, Pathfork has three lots on offer at this year’s November Two Year Old Sale.
