Flower Alley was responsible for a second consecutive winner of the G3 4Racing Yellowwood Handicap at Turffontein on Saturday when his daughter Gilded Butterfly ran out a convincing winner of that 1800 graded feature.
The 2021 Yellowwood Handicap had been captured by another daughter of Flower Alley in the form of Bold Fortune.
Trained, like Bold Fortune, by Stuart Pettigrew, four-year-old Gilded Butterfly had impressed when winning her last start and successfully took a step up in class to land the 2022 Yellowwood Handicap in fine style.
Under Kabelo Matsunyane, Gilded Butterfly hit the front a long way from home and she kept going gallantly to win by a length and three-quarters.
The filly was one of four daughters of Flower Alley to contest this year’s Yellowwood Handicap.
Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Gilded Butterfly, who is out of the Silvano mare Gallica Rose, has now won four of her 11 starts.
Gilded Butterfly is the 33rd stakes winner for her sire, with the progeny of Flower Alley having earned more than $44 000 000 in prize money.
Flower Alley went oh-so-close to having a graded stakes double at Turffontein on Saturday with another Stuart Pettigrew trained daughter of the G1 Travers Stakes winner, Feather Boa, finishing second, beaten a neck, in Saturday’s G3 HSH Princess Charlene Starling Stakes.
A son of Distorted Humor (also grandsire of Saturday’s G2 Allied Steelrode-Onamission Charity Mile hero Bingwa), Flower Alley has five lots on offer at this year’s November Two Year Old Sale.
