Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s successful Danehill horse Oratorio supplied his second consecutive New Turf Carriers Merchants winner when his son Ultra Magnus (fourth in the 2019 Merchants) won that G3 sprint at Turffontein on Saturday.

Oratorio is also the sire of 2019 G2 Merchants winner Mardi Gras, who has earned nearly R1 000 000 in stakes.

Trained by Peter Muscutt, the Haras Del Carmo bred Ultra Magnus powered home, under Donovan Dillon, to lift the 2020 Merchants by an emphatic two lengths.

A lightly raced five-year-old, Ultra Magnus has now won six of just 12 starts.

Out of the stakes placed Lecture mare Field Star, Ultra Magnus is bred on the same Oratorio/Lecture cross as dual G1 winner Van Halen.

He is the 59th stakes winner for Oratorio -Champion Sire in Italy in both 2012 and 2013, and the sire of eight G1 winners thus far.
