Mauritzfontein’s resident sire Byword enjoyed notable success at Greyville on Wednesday, when his four-year-old daughter Camphoratus won the G3 Flamboyant Stakes to collect the first graded victory of her career.

Bred by her part-owners, the Middlefield Stud, the Robbie/Shannon Hill trained Camphoratus defied her 36-1 odds by storming home late to win the 1600m race by a neck from the Australian bred Roy’s Riviera with 2017 Flamboyant winner Fort Ember back in third place.

Camphoratus, who was ridden to victory by Calvin Habib, has now won four and has banked R422 325 in prize money.

A member of her sire’s first crop, Camphoratus is out of Wild Camphor –whose Triple Crown winning sire Horse Chestnut is from the same family as Byword himself!

A half-brother to multiple G1 winner Proviso and to G2 Prix Eugene Adam hero Finche (who ran fourth in the 2018 G1 Lexus Melbourne Cup), Byword was a top class racehorse whose seven career victories included the 2010 G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

The handsome chestnut, France’s Champion Male Miler of 2010, also won both the G2 Prix Dollar and G2 Prix du Muguet (a race previously won by the champion sire Dansili) as well as the G3 Prix du Chermin de Fer du Nord.

Camphoratus aside, Byword’s most notable offspring thus far include G1 contender Crown And Country (also out of a Horse Chestnut daughter), useful fillies No More Words and Shifting Shadows, and Champion Juvenile Stakes winner Rain Spider.
