Ridgemont’s five time G1 winning stallion Canford Cliffs enjoyed good success both as a sire and broodmare sire this weekend.
On Friday, classy three-year-old Bosustow (out of the Canford Cliffs mare Bumbasina) won the Gold Coast Magic Millions 3yo Guineas, while the following day, Canford Cliffs filly Almond Sea ran out a convincing winner of the Listed Swallow Stakes at Turffontein.
Trained by Tony Peter, three-year-old Almond Sea was sent off a warm favourite for the 1160m sprint on Saturday and she duly obliged.
Under the inform Gavin Lerena, Almond Sea appeared in trouble close, but unleashed a fine turn of foot which saw the filly get up to win, a shade cosily, by a long neck.
Another Canford Cliffs filly, Pointer, ran fourth to her paternal half-sister.
Bred by Peter de Beyer, the speedy Almond Sea has won five of eight starts, with her wins including the 2024 Listed Wilgerbosdrift Ruffian Stakes.
Almond Sea, a half-sister to fellow Swallow Stakes winner Sarah as well as to G2 winner Celtic Rumours, is out of the Dupont mare Sylvie.
Her sire Canford Cliffs also ranks as the broodmare sire of classy Australian galloper Bosustow. The latter, a half-brother to G1 winner Amelia’s Jewel, was stakes-placed on four occasions prior to Friday night, including when third to Broadsiding in last year’s G1 J.J. Atkins Stakes.
His moment in the spotlight came courtesy of a perfectly-timed ride from jockey Josh Parr in Friday’s $3 000 000 contest, who settled three wide with cover before producing the colt with clear galloping room at the top of the straight. Bosustow dashed a length clear inside the final 100m before staving off the late challenge from Barry Lockwood’s Give Me Space.
The win took Bosustow’s earnings beyond $1.9 million and now Group 1 aims loom for the stallion prospect. Bosustow’s half-brother, a colt by Siyouni out of Bumbasina that is a full-brother to Amelia’s Jewel, sold to Perth trainer Luke Fernie for $625,000 at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Bosustow and Amelia’s Jewel are out of the Canford Cliffs mare Bumbasina, who won twice and ran second in the Listed Ruby Stakes and third in the Listed Navigation Stakes.
Canford Cliffs also looks to have a very promising two-year-old to his name in the form of Direct Hit. The latter made a winning debut when romping home by seven and a quarter lengths at Fairview on Friday.
