Cape champion lands Paddock Stakes

10th January 2022

Cape star Captain’s Ransom made it nine wins from just 11 starts when running out a courageous winner of the G1 Cartier Paddock Stakes (1800m) at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Bred by Moutonshoek, the four-year-old was trying the 1800m for a first time on Saturday, but showed her class with a smart performance.

Under Richard Fourie, Captain’s Ransom stayed on strongly down the outside of the track to score by a head.

The 2022 Paddock Stakes was another great result for Cape bred thoroughbreds -with the first four home all Cape bred fillies.

The Justin Snaith trained filly, in the process, made it three wins from three starts this season, with Captain’s Ransom having triumphed in the G3 Diana Stakes and the Amy Miller Memorial Pinnacle Stakes in her two previous outings this season.

A daughter of multiple champion sire Captain Al, Captain’s Ransom (who has now banked more than R1.5 million in stakes thus far), has now won six graded races (three G1 races) including both the 2020 G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas and 2021 G1 Majorca Stakes.

Captain’s Ransom, a R225 000 buy from the 2019 National Yearling Sale, is out of the Red Ransom mare Cinna’s Ransom -a half-sister to French G3 winner Black Rock Desert and to high-class Japanese galloper Toyo Seattle.
