Varsfontein Stud’s homebred stallion Erik The Red had a big day at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday when his sons Erik Dubois and Red Spice finished first and third in the G1 World Pool Moment Of The Day Premiers Champion Stakes (1600m).

It is not the first time that Erik The Red two-year-olds have dominated the finish of a feature race this season. His sons Red Spice and Roskilde ran 1-2 in the G3 Ridgemont Cape Of Good Hope Nursery in February, with the same pair finishing 1-3 in the Listed JC Le Roux Summer Juvenile Stakes a month earlier.

Trained by Louis Goosen (who was enjoying his first G1 success on Sunday), Erik Dubois made a mockery of his 14-1 starting price with a convincing win.
Under former South African champion jockey Lyle Hewitson, the gelded son of Erik The Red kept galloping strongly to claim Sunday’s R1 750 000 contest by a long neck.

Bred by Dr Alan Miller, Erik Dubois has won two of five starts, and he races for the Wernars Family.
Out of the Count Dubois mare Comtesse Dubois, Erik Dubois was a R375 000 buy from the 2025 March Yearling Sale.

The blue blooded Erik The Red, whose relative Note To Self won this season’s G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July, is a bred on similar lines to South African l Crown winner Malmoos, the sire of Sunday’s unbeaten G2 winner Marchland.

A son of Captain Al, Erik The Red has 17 lots on offer at the August Two Year Old Sale.
