Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s prominent sire Var’s good run of form this season continued when the ever-green son of Forest Wildcat had a trio of winners at Kenilworth on Saturday.
Var’s weekend treble included an eye catching two-year-old winner in the form of Savea.
The latter, bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, made a smart, winning debut when running on smartly to win first time out over 1200m on Saturday.
Closely inbred to Storm Cat, Savea was a R210 000 buy from the 2017 Cape Yearling Sale.
The colt is out of Tiger Ridge’s G3 Acacia Handicap winning daughter Amur Affair and he is the fourth two-year-old winner for Var this season thus far.
Savea was not the only 2yo for last season’s Champion Sire of 2YOs to impress on Saturday –with Var’s daughter Au Revoir, bred by Avontuur, running a smart second on debut over 1000 metres.
Var also enjoyed success when his Dr Ian Heyns bred daughter Star Evolution broke her maiden over a mile. The consistent 3yo filly was not winning out of turn, with Star Evolution having been second at each of her last three starts.
The final and third winner for Var on Saturday came when his son Red Mars got off the mark when triumphant for log leading trainer Justin Snaith over 1600 metres.
Sire of 20 G1 horses and counting, Var’s other recent winners of note include the filly Val-La-Ree, a winner of her only two starts, and Need For Speed Sprint hero Speedpoint.
