Varsfontein Stud’s successful sire Judpot enjoyed a quick-fire double at the Vaal racecourse on Thursday afternoon. From four runners carded, Judpot enjoyed two wins, with another of his offspring, Torrey Pines, running third in the fourth race.
Incidentally, both of Judpot’s Thursday winners are trained by Grant Maroun.
Judpot’s first winner came when his John and Liz Slade bred gelding African Magic, who shed his maiden in good style over 1200m. The four-year-old ran on strongly to post a 1.4 length win, with tote favourite Perfect Pursuit only managing fourth.
Out of the Fort Wood mare African Badger, and bred on the same Judpot/Fort Wood cross as G1 winner Forest Indigo, African Magic was an R80 000 buy from the 2016 National Two Year Old Sale.
His sire’s second win on Thursday came when his 6yo gelded son Quattro won the sixth race in convincing fashion. Ridden by Ryan Munger, the consistent Quattro, placed in each of his five previous outings, picked up the fifth win of his career when posting a 1.9 length win over 1200m on the Classic track.
Closely inbred to breed shaping mare Lassie Dear, Quattro is out of the Al Mufti mare Quatrain.
Judpot, whose four time G1 winning close relative Alpha Centauri lines up in Saturday’s G1 Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown, is a proven high class sire, with the A P Indy son having sired such notable G1 winners as Along Came Polly, the above mentioned Forest Indigo, Coral Fever and Juxtapose.
