Varsfontein Stud’s outstanding sire Gimmethegreenlight continued his march to a third South African Champion Sires title when his daughters Pineapplemintgreen and Miss Greenlight ran 1-2 respectively in Friday’s Listed East Cape Breeders Stakes (1200m).
Sent off a 10-1 shot for Friday’s Fairview feature, the Eric Sands trained Pineapplemintgreen stayed on powerfully under Corne Orffer to hold off a late challenge from her paternal half-sister Miss Greenlight and win by half a length.
The three-year-old, who has now won four of 13 starts, is the 65th stakes winner for Gimmethegreenlight.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, Pineapplemintgreen is out of the Windrush mare Sunsational.
Gimmethegreenlight, Champion Sire in South Africa in both 2020-2021 and 2022-2023, has had another outstanding season in 2023-2024, with his flagbearers this season including such G1 winners as Gimme A Nother, Lucky Lad, Proceed and Green With Envy, with the latter favourite to win Saturday’s G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July.
