Varsfontein Stud’s leading sire Gimmethegreenlight has enjoyed a sensational 2016-2017 and the son of More Than Ready was back in the news this weekend, thanks to a pair of feature race winners in two different countries.

First of the Gimmethegreenlight winners to score was talented filly Beataboutthebush, who made it win number five (from just eight outings) when landing Friday’s Listed East Cape Paddock Stakes for trainer (and part-owner) Alan Greeff over a mile.
In scoring a facile one and a half length win, the Varsfontein Stud bred three-year-old was making it feature race win number two, with the talented Beataboutthebush having previously triumphed in the Listed Breeders Guineas back in March.
The well bred Beataboutthebush, a half-sister to G3 East Cape Derby winner True Master, was a R300 000 buy from the 2015 National Yearling Sale, and Friday’s win pushed her earnings to R365 000.

Gimmethegreenlight also has a cracking crop of two-year-olds, and his son Flanders (one of four black type winners to have emerged from his sire’s second crop) made it four wins in a row when landing the FMC Finance Thoroughbred Breeders Champagne Stakes at Borrowdale on Saturday at the prohibitive odds of 1-3!
Flanders, who had previously captured the G3 Champion Juvenile Stakes, was bred by the Zandvliet Stud and has now won four of just six outings.
He is out of the Captain Al mare Look To The South, and is thus bred on the same Gimmethegreenlight/Captain Al cross as G1 winner Gunner.
Flanders was not the only Gimmethegreenlight 2yo to impress over the weekend, with the Ascot Stud bred Girl In Gold becoming her sire’s 16th two-year-old winner for the season when breaking her maiden by two lengths, going away, over 1400m at Scottsville on Sunday.
Winner of the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, Gimmethegreenlight’s six first crop stakes winners include G1 Premiers Champion Stakes winner Gunner and the uber quick filly Green Pepper, while his stakes winners from his second crop include G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Green Plains.
The sire has seven lots on offer at the upcoming National Two Year Old Sale, including a half-sister to G1 filly Dawn Calling (Lot 257), a filly from the same family as Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev (Lot 331) and a half-sister to six time stakes winner Captain Swarovski (Lot 333).
