Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s perennially successful sire Var enjoyed more feature race success this past weekend.
On Sunday, Var’s daughter Mia Finola made it win number five, from only 11 outings, when she romped home to land the Fillies Classic at Borrowdale Park by 1.75 lengths.
Bred by the Piemonte Stud, the three-year-old Mia Finola had reeled off three wins in a row last year, when her wins included the Champagne Stakes.
Out of the Wolfhound mare Basilica, Mia Finola was a R50 000 buy from the 2017 National Yearling Sale.
Her sire Var, South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2YOs the past two seasons running, has enjoyed another good season thus far in 2018-2019, with Var’s other notable performers this season including the graded stakes winning fillies Ghaalla (G3 Fillies Mile) and Schippers (G3 Epol Magnolia Handicap), the quick stakes winner Speedpoint (Southeaster Sprint) and the progressive Allez France Stakes winner Gottalottaluv.
The sire of more than 80 stakes horses (and counting!), Var had yearlings make up to R2 000 000 at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
