Wilgerbosdrift’s inform stallion Fire Away is the sire of My Best Shot, who was named Horse Of The Season and Champion 3YO Colt/Gelding for 2024-2025 at Saturday’s East Cape Racing Awards ceremony.
Trained by Alan Greeff, and bred by Varsfontein Stud, My Best Shot won eight races last season including the Listed Ibhayi Stakes, Listed Bryanston Auctioneers East Cape Guineas and Listed World Sports Betting East Cape Derby.
To date, the Fire Away gelding has won ten of 18 starts for earnings of R931 225.
My Best Shot, who is out of the Fort Wood mare Gypsy Madonna, races for Nick & Val McFall, Messrs G L Blank, G Piha, H N Yutar, D Yutar, Mr & Mrs A C Greeff.
The gelding was a R120 000 buy from the 2023 Cape Yearling Sale.
Fire Away, whose progeny include such G1 winners as Confederate and Fire Attack, looks to have another exciting sort on his hands in the form of Fish Hawk.
The latter, runner up on her only previous start, made a big impression when victorious at Turffontein on Saturday.
Trained by Stuart Pettigrew, three-year-old Fish Hawk romped home to win the Topbet Maiden Plate (F and M) (1200m) as she liked by three and a half lengths.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, the daughter of Fire Away races for Messrs M Dally, D S Pitman & Wilgerbosdrift (Pty) Ltd.
Saturday’s winner was produced by the Silvano mare Osprey.
