30th Apr 2017

The Alchemy’s promising young sire Gitano Hernando was represented by a first crop stakes winner when his daughter Whose That Girl won the Listed Highlands Stud Sweet Chestnut Stakes, the first leg of the R600 000 Fillies Winter Series, at Kenilworth on Saturday.

The Narrow Creek Stud bred filly, who had been competing in G1 company previously, downed a decent field of 3yo fillies in the 1400m, running on to defeat the Silvano filly Sylvanite by three parts of a length.

(Both Gitano Hernando and Silvano hail from the same Niniski male line). Whose That Girl, a close runner up in the Listed Irridescence Stakes as a two-year-old, has now won three times –from 1000 to 1600 metres and won’t stop here.

She was an R85 000 buy from the 2015 March Yearling Sale.

Her sire Gitano Hernando is also sire of the promising Brave Nomad, who is unbeaten in two outings, and feature race contenders Tanami and Villanelle. To date, Gitano Hernando has been represented by 22 first crop runners who have either won or finished in the money.

From an outstanding female line (his third dam won the 1000 Guineas), Gitano Hernando won both the G1 Goodwood Stakes and G1 Singapore Airlines International Cup in a career which saw him account for such top class performers as G1 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, G1 Santa Anita Derby winners Colonel John and Tiago, G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Vision D’Etat, G1 Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House, G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile hero Furthest Land and G1 Dubai Duty Free winner Presvis.
