Drakenstein Stud’s successful stallion Philanthropist has enjoyed plenty of success in 2018, and the strapping son of Kris S was at it again this past Friday.
Philanthropist daughter Raven Girl picked up the fifth win of her career when justifying favouritism in the Walmer Handicap at Fairview on Friday.
Trained by Tara Laing, the Drakenstein Stud owned and bred four-year-old was too strong for her ten rivals, and put two and a quarter lengths between herself and runner up Libra as the 10-3 tote favourite.
Ridden to victory by Chase Maujean, the 2018 Walmer Handicap winner is out of the Wolfhound mare Bright Wolf.
One of daughters of Philanthropist in the Walmer Handicap, Raven Girl is no stranger to winning feature races, with the filly’s previous triumphs including the Zimbabwe Oaks and Silver Slipper.
Her G3 Queens County Hcp winning sire Philanthropist has enjoyed big race success in all of Canada, Hong Kong and South Africa, with his notable runners in 2018 including Hong Kong Classic Cup hero Singapore Sling. The latter, to date, has banked in excess of HK$14 000 000 during his international campaign with Singapore Sling proving a superb advertisement for the quality of thoroughbred produced in this country.
From the same male line as South Africa’s late champion sires Al Mufti and Captain Al, as well as current red hot US sire and Breeders’ Cup Classic winning champion Blame, Philanthropist has two fillies on offer at the 2018 Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale in November. His pair includes a filly whose two siblings have won 16 races between them (Lot 34), and a daughter of Listed Jamaica Handicap heroine Atlantic Storm from an outstanding British family (Lot 35).
