Third G1 win for Wylie Hall relative

24th Sep 2018

Outstanding filly Melody Belle, a close relative of Cheveley Stud’s multiple G1 winning sire Wylie Hall maintained her unbeaten record this season when lifting the G1 Windsor Park Plate at Hastings on Saturday.

Melody Belle

The four-year-old daughter of Commands (sired by Danehill, as is Redoute’s Choice-sire of Wylie Hall) came into Saturday’s race off a courageous win in the G1 Tarzino Trophy having previously captured the G2 Foxbridge Plate and duly made it back to back wins with a convincing display in the one mile feature.

Doubts expressed by some about her ability to extend her prowess to 1600 metres were kicked for touch as she jumped to lead the field in the short run to the first bend and then take a trail. By the midway stage regular rider Shafiq Rusof had the bay mare humming and as the field turned for home with Melody Belle easing three wide to challenge, it was obvious she had plenty in reserve.

Shortly after it was all over. Showing her disdain for a quality field, Melody Belle sprinted clear and Rusof had the luxury of an attempted pukana and salute as the classy mare hit the line nearly two lengths in front.

Melody Belle, New Zealand’s Champion 2YO of 2016-2017, has now won eight of 15 races and has earned over NZ$1 000 000 in stakes.

Redoute’s Choice

She is a direct descendant of tap-root mare Belle Time, who also ranks as the fourth dam of Cheveley’s Wylie Hall.

Wylie Hall’s triple Australian Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice was also in the news over the weekend. The Arrowfield Stud flagbearer, also responsible for sire stars Snitzel, Stratum and Not A Single Doubt, is the sire of Saturday’s impressive G1 De Bortoli Golden Rose Stakes winner The Autumn Sun.

The latter, a G1 winner at two and winner of four of only five outings, stamped himself a leader of his generation with a powerful victory in Saturday’s AUS$1 000 000 feature.

The Autumn Sun, who has now banked AUS $1,113,021 in prize money, is one of 33 G1 winners sired by Redoute’s Choice.

Winner of both the G1 SA Derby and G1 Champions Challenge, the earner Wylie Hall will be represented by his runners this season.

The blue blooded Australian bred has a single lot on offer at the 2018 Ready To Run Sale in Johannesburg in November –a filly (Lot 36) whose four time winning dam is a half-sister to G3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap hero Sharp Design.
