Futura colt swoops to Variety Club Mile win

24th Apr 2021

Drakenstein Stud’s four time G1 winning sire Futura came up with his fifth first crop stakes winner when his exciting three-year-old son Warrior won the G3 World Sports Betting Variety Club Mile (1600m), the first leg of the Winter Series, at Kenilworth on Saturday.

An impressive winner of his two previous starts, the Ridgemont Highlands bred Warrior stormed home, under a well judged ride from Richard Fourie to win the Variety Club Mile by a long neck at the expense of the front running FireAlley.

One of two feature race winners on the card for trainer Justin Snaith, Warrior has now won three of just six starts and looks yet another exciting prospect for his sire Futura, who has quickly established himself as one of the most promising young stallions in South Africa.

Warrior was his sire’s top lot sold off the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale where the Futura colt was knocked down to Peter Doyle and Diane Nagle for R1 200 000.

He is the fifth stakes winner to have emerged from Futura’s eye catching first crop, with this crop also including G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe victor Nourbese, once beaten Bauhinia Handicap queen Sweet Future, and Zimbabwe stars Dindingwe and Diesel And Dust. The latter is unbeaten in two starts thus far, while Dindingwe has won six of just eight starts.

South Africa’s Horse Of The Year of 2014-2015, Futura is also the sire of promising filly Pink Tourmaline, a winner of three of seven starts thus far.
