Futura filly lands Dahlia Plate

13th May 2022

Drakenstein Stud’s highly promising sire, and former Horse Of The Year, Futura has had a good few days and the champion son of Dynasty came up with a very impressive two-year-old winner when his daughter Ekoria landed the Listed World Sports Betting Dahlia Plate (1200m) at Fairview on Friday.
Trained by Gavin Smith, Ekoria came into Friday’s two-year-old feature off a brilliant, seven and a quarter length maiden win, with the Futura daughter having previously finished second in the Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery on debut.

Ekoria turned Friday’s Dahlia Plate into a procession, with jockey JP Van Der Merwe guiding the filly home to a clear-cut and emphatic three and a quarter length win.

Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Ekoria was a R260 000 buy from the 2021 August Two Year Old Sale.

She is out of former Zimbabwe star and Silvano mare Equina -who, like Futura himself, is directly descended in female line from the Plum Bold mare Bold Vixen.

This is also the family of impressive recent G2 Heineken SA Nursery winner Miss Cool -whose dam French Rose is a half-sister to Futura.

The latter had also enjoyed success at the Vaal on Thursday where Futura’s Listed Ormond Ferraris Oaks Trial winning daughter Light Of The Moon ran out a good winner of the fifth race.

Futura has some very smart two-year-olds representing him this season, with the champion also sire of recent G3 Godolphin Barb third placegetter Aztec Warrior and the promising filly Princess Ozma.
