Varsfontein Stud’s multiple champion sire Gimmethegreenlight made international headlines on Saturday when his champion daughter Gimme A Nother won the G2 John C. Mabee Stakes at Del Mar.
The 5-year-old bay was well-positioned throughout by leading rider Juan Hernandez, then fired in the lane to come away a 1 1/4-length winner in the nine-furlong turf test. She picked up a check for $150,000 from the gross purse of $252,000 to increase her career earnings to $425,773 with her eighth win in her 12th start.
The winning rider said of his John C. Mabee win, “She (assistant Clapham) told me she’s a really nice filly. She told me she can run from behind the pace; you can do whatever you want with her. Around the turn she was getting out a little bit and the #4 (favorite Medoro) horse was getting a little close to me. So I was just trying to get in a good position and save ground. As soon as the horse ahead of me stepped out a little bit, around the quarter pole, that’s when she took off.”
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein (whose Newstead Stables LLC race the mare), Gimme A Nother was Equus Champion 3YO Filly of 2023-2024.
Unbeaten in seven starts in South Africa, Gimme A Nother’s local victories included the 2024 G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic and 2024 G1 TAB Empress Club Stakes.
Prior to her win on Saturday, Gimme A Nother had finished second in the G2 Hillsborough Stakes, G3 Modesty Stakes presented by Veritas Prime, and G2 Canadian Stakes.
Gimme A Nother, whose half-sister Special Star won at Turffontein on Saturday, is out of champion Nother Russia.
Her multiple champion sire Gimmethegreenlight had another excellent season in 2024-2025 where his 14 stakes winners included G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July winner The Real Prince and champion Gimme A Prince.
The son of More Than Ready has six lots on offer at the Two Year Old Sale next month.
