Klawervlei Stud’s inform sire Pomodoro who triumphed in the July back in 2012, made headlines on Hollywoodbets Durban July day on Saturday when his son Black Thorn stormed to victory in the G3 DSTV Gold Vase (3000m) at Hollywoodbets Greyville.
Runner up in both the G3 The Citizen Gold Bowl and G3 WSB R10 000 1st Deposit Match Caradoc Gold Cup earlier in the season, Black Thorn was all the rage for Saturday’s graded feature, with the gelding jumping a well backed tote favourite.
Keagan De Melo bought Black Thorn with a sustained run around the Greyville turn, and from there, the pair powered away to score by a deceptively easy just over three-parts of a length win.
Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Black Thorn is trained, like his sire, by Sean Tarry.
The consistent four-year-old, who has finished in the first three in each of his last 11 starts, has now won six times, with Black Thorn finishing unplaced just three times thus far.
Black Thorn is another feather in the cap of his versatile sire Pomodoro, with the latter responsible for graded stakes winners over trips ranging from 1200m to 3000m this season! His flagbearers this season include not only Black Thorn but also G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Epsom Girl and the progressive three-year-old Tchaikovsky.
Pomodoro went close to recording a graded race double on Saturday with his promising two-year-old daughter Woodland Retreat catching the eye when finishing a close up second in the G2 Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Slipper
South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2017-2018, Pomodoro is also responsible for the likes of dual G1 winner, and Equus Champion, Return Flight, G1 Cape Racing Presents The Cape Guineas victor Russian Rock and R5 million plus earner Cirillo –to name but three!
