Great Britain filly lifts Gardenia

10th Nov 2017

Southford Stud’s well bred resident sire Great Britain was represented by another stakes winner when his four-year-old daughter Queen Laurie lifted the Listed Gardenia Stakes over 1000m at Turffontein last night.

Trained and owned by Grant Maroun, Queen Laurie was steered to victory in the R150 000 contest by Ryan Munger.

The filly, now a three time winner, accounted for the promising Ashaawes filly Winter Watch by 1.1 lengths, with Movie Show back in third.
Queen Laurie, who has now earned R355 450, was picking up the first feature win of her career but had previously finished second in 2016 Gardenia Handicap, G3 Lebelo Sprint, and third in the G3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap (behind fellow Great Britain filly Wrecking Ball).

Other notable performers sired by the former Al Quoz Sprint (Now G1) winning Great Britain include G3 Avontuur Umkhomazi Stakes/KZN Yearling Sale Million winner Al Mariachi (who has earned nearly R1 000 000 in prize money) and Listed Swallow Stakes winner Hashtag Strat.

Great Britain, who shares his sire Green Desert with outstanding stallions Invincible Spirit and Oasis Dream, is a full-brother to deceased G1 Lockinge Stakes winner Cape Cross, whose 100 plus stakes winners included the Epsom classic winning champions Ouija Board (dam of hot young sire Australia), Golden Horn, and now leading sire Sea The Stars.
