Impressive Sunday double for What A Winter

6th May 2019

Drakenstein Stud’s red-hot resident sire What A Winter made his mark in no uncertain terms at Kenilworth on Sunday, when the former multiple Equus Champion was responsible for a pair of impressive winners.

What A Winter’s impressive 2yo son Armando made it two wins from as many outings when scoring a convincing one length win in the Listed Somerset 1200 on Sunday (a race won last year by subsequent KRA Guineas hero Twist Of Fate).
The Lammerskraal Stud bred colt, a R650 000 buy from the 2018 National Sale, provided his in-form trainer Brett Crawford with a third feature race win on the weekend while maintaining his unbeaten record.

Armando, a four length winner on debut, could now be aimed at either the G1 Gold Medallion or G3 Cape Nursery (a race the progeny of What A Winter have won the last two years).

He is one of seven two-year-old winners to have represented What A Winter this season thus far.

Armando’s four time G1 winning sire What A Winter is also the sire of star 3yo filly Clouds Unfold, who showed her class when downing some smart male rivals to score a scintillating win in a pinnacle stakes over 1000m on Sunday. The pinnacle stakes was a 1-2 for What A Winter, with Clouds Unfold downing her G3 winning paternal half-brother Dutch Philip 1.75 lengths. Both Clouds Unfold and Dutch Philip are trained by Candice Bass-Robinson.
Bred and owned by Drakenstein Stud, the brilliant Clouds Unfold had been an impressive winner of the G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes last time out, and Clouds Unfold has now won seven of only nine outings.

To date, the classy filly has four graded victories to her name, with Clouds Unfold looking set to add to this tally shortly!
