Jubilee Stakes success for Canford Cliffs

10th June 2024

Ridgemont’s inform stallion Canford Cliffs enjoyed feature race success when his son Meridius won the G3 Jubilee Stakes (1800m) at Turffontein on Sunday.
Trained by Tony Peter, four-year-old Meridius was making his first start since an unplaced run in the G1 World Pool Premier’s Champions Challenge back in April.
Meridius was given a finely timed ride by recent G1 Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge winning rider Muzi Yeni to claim Sunday’s R250 000.
Yeni bought the son of Canford Cliffs with a strong late run and the pair dug down deep to best G3 Betway Victory Moon Stakes winner Atticus Finch and score by nearly three parts of a length.
Bred by Winterbach Stud, Meridius has now won six of 24 starts, with the gelding also victorious in the 2023 Listed @worldpool Twitter Handicap.
Meridius, who is out of the Parade Leader mare Zili, could now be supplemented to the G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July.
He is one of 26 stakes winners for his five-time G1 winning sire, with Canford Cliffs also sire of recent debut winner Ginger Delight.
The former Irish 2000 Guineas winner is having a fine season with his two-year-olds this season, and, at the time of writing, had been responsible for more juvenile winners in 2023-2024 than the likes of Lancaster Bomber, Querari, Var and What A Winter.
Canford Cliffs has two lots on offer at the KZN Yearling Sale in July -a half-brother (Lot 103) to recent G1 Daily News 2000 runner-up Flag Man, and a colt (Lot 110) from the family of star sires Cape Cross and Iffraaj.
