Winterbach Stud’s resident sire Master Archie gained yet another boost to his female line when his two-year-old half-brother Master Casper broke his maiden at Turffontein on Thursday.
In the process, the Querari sired Master Casper became the sixth winner, from six runners, for his dam La Volta.
Trained by Johan Janse Van Vuuren, the gelded Master Casper had finished fifth and seventh on his two previous starts but improved on those efforts to win a good race on Thursday.
Under Gavin Lerena, the two-year-old dug down deep to best first-timer Wolf Mountain and land Thursday’s Play Soccer 6,10 and 13 Maiden Plate (1000m) by just over half a length.
Bred by Messrs V Harry, S A Hanna & A A Azzie, Master Casper joins Majestic Palace as a recent winner for his dam La Volta.
The latter, a full-sister to G1 Allan Robertson Championship third Valeta, won eight times over 1000 metres including the Listed Bauhinia Handicap.
Her son Master Archie was an exceptional sprinter, whose seven wins included triumphs in both the G1 Computaform Sprint (a race won previously by such high-class stallions as Rafeef and What A Winter) and G3 World Sports Betting Man O’War Sprint.
Master Archie is one of the best sons of sire sensation Rafeef, with the latter set to stand for a fee of R120 000 this year.
Master Archie’s first foals are due to arrive later this year.
