Varsfontein Stud’s top-class resident sire Master Of My Fate made headlines at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.
Not only did his champion son Jan Van Goyen run out a brilliant winner of Saturday’s G1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, but another son, Major Master, ran a close second in the same day’s G3 Peninsula Handicap.
Equus Champion 2YO Colt of 2024-2025, the Mike and Mathew De Kock trained Jan Van Goyen showed his class when he romped home to an impressive win in the Cape Guineas.
Under Callan Murray, the striking bay hit the front 200m from home and stormed away to win the classic by two and three quarter lengths.
Runner up in the G2 Jackpot City Dingaans on his seasonal debut, Jan Van Goyen has finished first or second in each of his six starts. His previous wins included a near three and three quarter lengths triumph in last season’s G1 World Pool Moment Of The Day Premiers Champion Stakes.
The colt, who was bred by Mr and Mrs Trotter, Rob Alexander and Bruce Campbell, was raised at Boland Stud.
Out of the Oratorio mare Daydream Believer, Jan Van Goyen is owned by Henk Leyenaar, Daniella Erasmus and Louisa Huntingford.
Saturday’s G1 winner was a R600 000 buy from the 2024 KZN Yearling Sale, with Jan Van Goyen having now won four of six starts.
His inform sire Master Of My Fate is enjoying another good season in 2025-2026, with his flagbearers also including G2 Allied Steelrode-Onamission Charity Mile winner Atticus Finch and champion Golden Palm.
