Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s veteran sire Oratorio came up with his 60th individual stakes winner when his gelded son Gentleman’s Wager captured the Listed Michael Roberts Stakes (1750m) at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday.

One of three runners in the race for trainer Peter Muscutt, Gentleman’s Wager was given a fine ride by Tristran Godden.

Godden kept his mount well off the front running Sea Master early on, before bringing Gentleman’s Wager with a sustained challenge down the inside of the Scottsvillee track.

The pair found more in the closing stages to hold off challenges from Sir Michael and Fight Song and score by nearly three parts of a length.

Bred by Mrs Devachander and Laurence Wernars, seven-year-old Gentleman’s Wager has now won nine times from 33 starts for earnings of in excess of R500 000.

Out of the Var sired G2 Gold Circle Oaks winner Princess Of Light, Gentleman’s Wager was one of two runners in Sunday’s feature for Oratorio.

The latter, a dual Leading Sire in Italy, has two fillies on the upcoming Cape Premier Yearling Sale -a half-sister (Lot 58) to the useful Louis’ Diamond and Louis Gem, and a half-sister (Lot 183) to the stakes placed Top Of The Class.
