More two-year-old success for Antonius Pius

24th Mar 2017

Highlands Farm’s former leading first crop sire Antonius Pius was represented by his fifth juvenile winner this season thus far, when his 2yo son Itsgonnarain made a winning debut over 1100m when landing a juvenile plate at Fairview on Friday.

Bred by the Narrow Creek Stud, Itsgonnarain dug down deep to hold off a late challenge from well bred first timer Coyote Challenge to win by a half a length.

The gelding, who is out of the Lecture mare Dream Goddess, was a R180 000 buy from last year’s National Yearling Sale.

Former G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile runner up Antonius Pius, whose other notable offspring include graded winners Antonius Du Bois, Belong To Me and My Sanctuary, has been represented by 10 two-year-olds this season thus far to have won or finished in the money.

They include impressive filly Kissable, a winner of two of just three outings and entered in the G3 Pretty Polly Stakes, highly rated debut winner Neptune’s Rain and Saturday’s winner Laurent Du Var. Another smart 2yo by the sire is G3 Protea Stakes entrant Tribal Force.

Remarkably, the son of Danzig has four juveniles entered for the upcoming Listed East Cape Nursery.

Antonius Pius is currently third on South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs list, and is currently clear of the likes of Gimmethegreenlight, Captain Al, and Judpot.
