Oaks winner highlights Philanthropist’s big weekend

21st May 2018

Drakenstein Stud’s successful sire Philanthropist enjoyed a remarkable weekend this past week.
The chestnut son of Kris S was responsible for five local winners over the weekend, with his tally including an impressive Oaks winner in the form of Raven Girl.

Philanthropist

The latter made it win number four when sauntering to an effortless one and a quarter length victory in Sunday’s Listed Zimbabwe Oaks at Borrowdale to confirm herself as one of the leaders of her generation.

Bred by the Drakenstein Stud, Raven Girl had previously romped to a three length win in the Listed Silver Slipper.
The Bridget Stidolph trained 3yo filly, who is out of the Wolfhound mare Bright Wolf, has now won her last three in a row.

Raven Girl is one of a number of high-class 3yos representing her G3 winning sire this season, with others including G1 Investec Cape Derby third Pack Leader and Golden Slipper placegetter Tsessebe.

Philanthropist, whose other winners over the weekend included Philanthropy and Radlet –victorious at Borrowdale and Champ De Mars respectively, also enjoyed good success in South Africa this weekend.

His 2yo son Podcast impressed when scoring a two length victory, over older rivals, in a maiden plate over 1600m at Greyville on Saturday for trainer Gavin Van Zyl.
Bred by Dr Ian Heyns, Podcast had been a close second at his previous outing, and he looks an above average performer.

The colt is a fifth 2yo winner for Philanthropist this season, with others including impressive debut winners Vivir, who lines up in Saturday’s G1 Allan Robertson Championship, and Heaven’s Reward.

Singapore Sling

Philanthropist is also sire of the talented four-year-old filly She’s A Giver, who picked up the fourth win of her career when downing male rivals in a pinnacle stakes over 1600m at Turffontein on Sunday. Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, the Johan Janse Van Vuuren trained grey, whose previous wins included the 2016 G3 HSH Princess Charlene Of Monaco Starling Stakes, took her earnings to over R660 000 with Sunday’s 1.25 length win.

The Leading Sire on All Weather in the USA in 2014, Philanthropist has enjoyed another memorable season in 2017-2018, with his notable performers including Hong Kong star Singapore Sling.

He has two lots on July’s KZN Yearling Sale –a colt out of a four time winning daughter of Silvano (Lot 77), and a colt from the same family as G1 winners Real Princess, William Longsword, Imperious Star and Imperious Sue (Lot 276).
