South Africa’s reigning champion sire Silvano enjoyed another tremendous weekend this week, with the dual South African champion responsible for four winners.
The son of Lomitas’ four-timer was headed by his son Elusive Silva landing Saturday’s G2 World Sports Betting 1900 at Greyville.

Trained by Justin Snaith, the gelding was steered to victory by Bernard Fayd’Herbe, with the latter going on to win the very next race aboard Silvano’s G3 winning daughter Star Express. Elusive Silva had a half length to spare over Dark Moon Rising, with Matador Man running on for third -2.75 lengths behind the winner.
Bred by the Nutfield Stud, and a R375 000 buy from the 2014 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, the five-year-old Elusive Silva, now a likely Vodacom Durban July contender, has now won six of 16 races, with his previous wins including the 2017 G3 Cup Trial and 2016 G3 Winter Derby.
The chestnut, who has earned over R890 000 in stakes, is bred on the same Silvano/Fort Wood cross as G1 winners Marinaresco and Nightingale.
Elusive Silva, who was produced by the Fort Wood mare Esprit, is the second son of Silvano to win the WSB 1900, with Bold Silvano having prevailed in the same race back in 2010.
