Bred by Avontuur, the Dennis Bosch trained Chantyman was making just his second racecourse appearance, having finished a close up third on debut.

He made amends for his debut defeat with a breathtaking win on Wednesday, with Chantyman drawing clear to post a seven and a half length win over 1200m under jockey Anthony Delpech.

Out of the Quiet American mare Sea Of Calm, Chantyman was a R450 000 purchase from last year’;s National Yearling Sale.

Triple G1 winner and European champion Oratorio has made a superb start to his stud career with his other notable first South African crop winners including the exciting G2 Golden Horseshoe runner up Ancestry and Sacred Oration –who runs in the Listed Champion Juvenile Cup on Friday.

Other performers of note in Oratorio’s first South African include Listed Devon Air Stakes runner up Sequined, debut winner Mrs O and impressive winner Opera Royal.

A dual champion sire in Italy, Oratorio has been represented by seven G1 winners worldwide.
