Philanthropist flies high in North America

14th Jul 2017

Drakenstein Stud’s resident sire Philanthropist, whose daughter Alice’s War won a good race at Woodbine on Wednesday, continues to feature prominent on North American Sires List.

The strapping son of Kris S is currently sixth on North America’s Synthetics Sires List, with Philanthropist above such top stallions as City Zip, Scat Daddy, Speightstown and Candy Ride.

Philanthropist, who headed the Synthetics Sires List in 2014 and was runner up on that list a year later, has been represented by no fewer than 35 winners in North America this season.

The chestnut, sire of champions Phil’s Dream and Pender Harbour, made a cracking start to his South African stud career, with no fewer seven stakes horses emerging from Philanthropist’s first local crop (now three) headed by G2 Investec Dingaans winner Singapore Sling and recent G1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes second She’s A Giver, with another filly, Sail, having earned nearly R500 000 in prize money.

Philanthropist also has some very promising two-year-olds representing him this season, including Tsessebe, a fast finishing third in the G2 Durban Golden Slipper, and Pack Leader. The former has been entered for the G1 Thekwini Stakes, while Pack Leader has been entered in the G1 Premier’s Champion Stakes at the end of the month.

He has 13 lots on offer at next month’s National Two Year Old Sale, including a half-sister to stakes winner Jet Jamboree (Lot 134), a colt out of a half-sister to G3 winner and Dubai scorer Liquid Mercury (Lot 174), and a half-brother to smart filly Winter Watch from the same family as July winner Marinaresco (Lot 450).
